Standing with The Grandmother STANDING WITH THE GRANDMOTHER: DEEP SPIRITUAL ECOLOGY VS. ENVIRONMENTAL CHAOS

Reconnect with your living relationship to the natural world.  Awaken to your own energy flow and its living connection to the natural world and all its inhabitants great and small.

Cherokee spiritual teacher, Grandfather Duncan Sings-Alone, has been tasked to help awaken humanity to Mitakuye Oyas'in, the need to live in harmony with nature and all beings.  Native prophesies have foretold the ecological crisis we are in and must face.

Mitakuye Oyas'in means "all my relations" in Lakota and expresses both Native American and Zen Buddhist spiritual convictions that Earth, its elements and creatures, are sacred and that all creation is one and interdependent.

Roshi Paul Genki Kahn, a Zen Buddhist master, and Dr. Marc Imhoff, a prominent Earth scientist actively studying our planet and the environment from space using NASA satellites, will join Duncan in teaching Mitakuye Oyas'in practices.

This workshop will address the following fields of interest:

  • Deep Ecology: Native American and Zen spiritual relationship to Grandmother Earth and her beings.
  • One Planet: See satellite views of Earth from space, used to reveal patterns of concern and pathways to transformation.
  • Meditation: joining the Source
  • Embodiment: mind-body attunement to Nature - cultivating openness, strength and balance.
  • Energy: drawing and sharing Life Energy with yourself, others and the natural world.
  • Illuminating Indra's Net: practical steps to participating with Creation in caretaking.
  • Call: an optional initiation into Mitakuye Oyas'in - caretakers of the sacred elements (earth, water, fire & air) and our relationship with all beings.

Roshi Paul Genki Kahn, a pioneer of Western Buddhism, is founder of Zen Garland, An International Spiritual Community.  He has directed and led training at several international Buddhist centers.  Genki has also created and directed quality mental health services in the South Bronx, NY and other under-served communities.

Mark Imhoff, Ph.D. works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland where he serves as the Project Scientist for NASA's Terra satellite - one of NASA's Flagship Earth Observing System Missions dedicated to studying Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land surface.  He pioneered methods for using satellite data to measure the effects of urbanization on biodiversity, food security, and climate.

Rev. Grandfather Duncan Sings-Alone, a spiritual teacher, healer, and ceremonialist in the Lakota tradition for over 30 years, leads Native American Zen and the Red Path Sangha.  Duncan has been vested with a mission to bring Native American teachings, especially the importance of protecting Grandmother Earth and her inhabitants, to non-native peoples.  He is also a clinical psychologist, musician, and author of two books. See Duncan's blog.
